Laser Hair Removal for Darker Skin Tones

Nd:YAG technology, a full assessment, and settings chosen for your skin and your hair.

WHY WAVELENGTH MATTERS

Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment. On deeper skin tones there is more pigment in the surrounding skin as well as in the hair, so the wavelength used has to reach the follicle without being absorbed by the skin on the way there.

That is why the choice of wavelength matters more here than it does on fair skin — and why it is worth asking any clinic, including this one, which wavelength they plan to use on you.

The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus is a dual-wavelength device. It carries both the 755nm Alexandrite wavelength and the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength on the same machine.

The Nd:YAG wavelength penetrates more deeply and is absorbed less by melanin in the skin, which makes it suited to a broader range of skin tones when the correct treatment settings and protocols are used. Having both on the one machine means the wavelength can be matched to your skin, and changed through your course if your skin or your hair calls for it.

ASSESSMENT COMES FIRST

Every treatment plan begins with a free consultation. Skin type, hair colour, previous treatment history and any relevant medications or conditions are assessed before settings are chosen, and settings continue to be adjusted through your course as your hair growth changes.

Your skin is then tested before the first full treatment begins. A small number of test pulses are placed on the area at the settings chosen for you and the response is checked before the treatment goes ahead. A separate patch test at an earlier appointment is also available if you would prefer one.

WHY THIS MATTERS ON DEEPER SKIN

On deeper skin tones, the wrong wavelength or the wrong settings carry a real risk of burns or changes in pigmentation. That is the entire reason for the assessment, the choice of wavelength and the test pulses. They are not formalities — they are what allows treatment to go ahead with confidence rather than hope.

The Zimmer Cryo-7 cooling system runs continuously before, during and after each pulse, cooling the skin surface while the energy reaches the follicle. This protects epidermal integrity and allows effective settings to be used safely.

COMFORT AND SKIN PROTECTION

Every area is available, from a five-minute underarm treatment through to a full body appointment. Brazilian, underarms, legs, face, arms, back, shoulders, chest, stomach, hands and feet — anywhere brown or black hair grows.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Yes, with the right wavelength and correctly chosen settings. Used wrongly, laser does carry a real risk of burns or pigmentation change on deeper skin — which is why the assessment comes first, why the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength is used, and why your settings are tested on your own skin before your first full treatment.

  • Most clients need approximately 6–10 sessions for an initial course, varying with hair colour, growth cycle, skin type and hormonal factors.

  • Almost certainly. With more than nine years of experience, we have treated every skin tone — South Asian, African, Middle Eastern, East Asian, Mediterranean and European.

If you have been turned away somewhere else, or told your skin was too dark to treat, it is often because that clinic did not have a suitable wavelength available — not because your skin cannot be treated.
